What is the difference between community property and equitable distribution?

In community property states (AZ, CA, ID, LA, NV, NM, TX, WA, WI), marital assets and debts are split 50/50 regardless of who earned what. In equitable distribution states (the remaining 41 states + DC), courts divide property based on what's fair — often weighted by relative income, contributions, and other factors.

Will I really have to pay alimony for that long?

Alimony duration generally scales with marriage length. Short marriages (under 3 years) may result in little to no alimony. Long marriages (20+ years) can result in permanent or near-permanent support in some states. Texas and Florida are notably restrictive on alimony, while California is more generous.

How is child support calculated?

Child support is typically a percentage of the higher-earning parent's income, adjusted for the number of children and state cost of living. We use the income shares model common in most states. The base percentages are: 17% for one child, scaling to 35% for five or more children.
